selfie is a type of self-portrait photograph, typically taken with a hand-held digital camera or camera phone. Selfies are often associated with social networking. They are often casual, are typically taken either with a camera held at arm’s length or in a mirror, and typically include either only the photographer or the photographer and as many people as can be in focus. This is the definition of a selfie according to Wikipedia.

Oscars 2014 talked about twelve years slave, gravity but talk of the town is this selfie taken by Ellen DeGeneres.

The tweet has received more than 3M retweets and 1M favourites on twitter. After the show, Ellen DeGeneres’s follower growth was 47 times more than her average daily growth rate this year.

In addition to this, the Facebook page of Ellen DeGeneres show received over 2M likes for this selfie apart from half a million shares and over 45,000 comments.

Oscars is always a centre of vanity, but this time it was the selfies holding up the mirror.

Why Selfies?

Selfies are taken by people who want to garner attention. I would say that this trend is more related to marketing of products. Why do you think that face creams are more popular in countries like India. This shows the insecurity of people and the urge to showcase themselves on the ever-growing social media. Many researches conducted on this area shows that both women are men are alike while taking selfie photographs.

A 2013 study of Facebook users found that posting photos of oneself correlates with lower levels of social support from and intimacy with Facebook friends (except for those marked as Close Friends)

The selfie has arguably become the greatest photographic trend of our time. Why are we so interested in taking and sharing selfies and how does observing an image of yourself differ from observing a picture of someone else, asks University College London neuroscientist James Kilner.

People take selfies for many reasons. Firstly it is a popular thing amongst young people, particularly teenagers so they do this to follow the popular trend. Secondly for social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter, most people take selfies to make their profile picture. Thirdly there are a lot of very vain people in the world who think they’re incredibly handsome or beautiful, selfies are just another way of showing off for vain people.

People have been doing it for years and someone came up with the word selfie and gave it the current attention that it gets now. Nothing new here!

Research shows that women take more selfies than men. What do you think ladies?

So whose the winner here? Its Samsung Galaxy Note. Samsung has made Ellen their brand ambassador and the brand person has done it neatly with her selfies making the talk of the town. With millions of tweets going around the internet, Samsung’s strategy has worked out. But Samsung don’t know that Ellen is an Apple fan. She used her iPhone in the backstage and posted another set of selfies taken with her iPhone. So all these selfies doing round the internet has benefited the marketers and what about the poor customers? Did they get some value for the money they spent?
