For everyproject to be managed, you need tools for collaboration, task management, time management, people management, deadlines, deliverables and so on. The traditional methods of using paper and white boards works and I prefer using paper, pen and white boards. It makes easy to list down your tasks, deadlines, action items, deliverable’s etc on a board and present to the team so that everyone on the team are aware on the project progress as well as updates. You won’t get surprises on those delivery dates and helps in smooth task management. It helps you manage your projects as well as your teams.

In software development, we are all using either waterfall model or the most common Agile methodologies. Agile is the talk of the town and even though you don’t exactly know what agile is, you use it! The paper and white boards serves the purpose of task management and the deadlines. But if you have a cross functional team or teams working from different locations, you definitely need the help of collaboration tools. There are manyproject management tools available in the market, both free tools as well as paid tools. These tools help you in project management, task management, real-time collaboration, resource management and meeting the deadlines. The main advantage is that you can use these tools no matter where you sit and work.

As most of you involved in the software development makes use of Agile methodologies, I am reviewing two collaboration tools which helps you in better project management -TrellovsAny.do.

The good thing about Trello and Any.do is that you can apply these tools in your everyday life as well!

To do lists are the primary tool for Agile methodology. The to do lists can be of two types. One is the simple to do list and other one is the advanced project management list. Any.DO belongs to the first category where users are reminded of their tasks and Trello belongs to the second where the users can manage their projects as well as their personal tasks.

Trello

Trellois a freeweb-basedproject management applicationmade byFog Creek Software.Trello uses a paradigm for managing projects known as Kanban, a method that had originally been popularized byToyotain the 1980’s for supply chain management. Projects are represented byboards, which containlists(corresponding to task lists). Lists containcards(corresponding to tasks). Cards are supposed to progress from one list to the next (via drag-and-drop), for instance mirroring the flow of a feature from idea to implementation. Users can be assigned to cards. Users and boards can be grouped intoorganizations.

Both these tools stand out from other basic to do lists and project management tools. Both of them are available on all the devices. So it’s up to you to decide which one is suitable for your requirements. Remember that it’s you and your team who areinvolved in the project and your responsibility to deliver the best results. The tool can provide you the means to deliver those results. Before selecting any tool, it’s better to evaluate your requirements and select the best tool which matches with your requirements than going with the market recommendations.
