Every day, millions of smartphones run out of space. While phones with 16GB or 32GB of storage are becoming more popular, many phones around the world have much less storage, often as low as 4GB. And with the barrage of images, videos, apps and documents that keep piling up, at some point it becomes a mess—it’s hard to find what you need when you need it, and your phone slows down and starts crashing. We all eventually reach that point where we have to choose what to keep or delete.
Tech giant Google’s newest Android app – Files Go, helps you to manage your Android phone’s storage and easily share files on your phone. Files Go is an app that takes a mobile-first approach to freeing up phone storage space, finding files faster and easily sharing them with your friends and family.
Free up space on your phone and find files faster
- Free up space. Get personalized suggestions about which files to delete, whether it’s unused apps, large files, duplicate files or low-resolution videos and memes detected using Google’s latest mobile vision technology.
- Find files faster. No more navigating through a maze of folders. Find exactly the stuff you want with smart filters that automatically organize your images, videos, apps, documents and more.
- Backup files to the cloud. If you want to keep a file forever, select it from the Files menu and back it up to Google Drive or any other cloud storage app.
- Share files offline. Transfer directly from your phone to a nearby friend’s phone without using any data. The file transfers are encrypted, fast (up to 125 Mbps) and free.
Google have been testing Files Go for a month, and their results shows that an average user is saving 1GB of space and has shared many files with others without using data. Files Go is globally available on the Google Play Store for all phones running Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and higher.
Files Go takes less than 6MB of storage on your phone as per Google Play Store. Also Files Go’s offline file sharing is secured with WPA2 encryption, providing more secure file transfer.

If your friends and relatives are also using Files Go, then you can share your pictures, videos, documents, or apps with them even without internet. The files can be transferred at speeds up to 125 Mbps and it works without the internet, so it doesn’t cost mobile data.
The app has been downloaded by more than 5M users till now from Google Play Store, within a month of launch.
The Files Go app also provides a recommendation feature, which will help you to remove unwanted files or apps which are not used in the past 30 days. You will receive alerts for apps with a large cache of unnecessary files or duplicate files stored in your phone.
There is also a feature to back up your files to Google Drive or Dropbox before removing it from your phone. Files Go uses secure hotspot connection to transfer files from your phone to other devices. For security purposes, the recipient has to approve the connection before files can be sent.
In the settings, you can control the notifications based on different events like low storage, unused apps, large media files and duplicate files.
Files Go is way superior than many other apps with respect to the user experience. Similar to other Google products, Files Go user interface is simple and easy to use.
Files Go is similar to cleanup utility apps like SHAREit, Xender, CShare, CM Transfer, Airdroid, Xiaomi Mi Drop and Apple’s AirDrop. All these applications don’t require an internet connection for file sharing or transfer.
